Adult Basic Sailing

This introductory course covers terminology, safety, points of sail, keelboat maneuvering & docking and sail trim. It includes both classroom and on the water instruction in a ballasted, fixed keel sailboat (not a dinghy). This class is structured for adults not interested in being in the water while sailing. Sailing is done both in Eagle Harbor and Puget Sound, dependent on wind conditions. This is a great way to learn to have fun while gaining the skills needed to take the boat out on your own.

Boating for Families

Enjoying the water with family doesn’t have to be imtimidating. This class is intended to help all members of the family actively participate in the boating experience. We teach you what to expect, which areas are family friendly and how far you can expect to travel. We focus on how to enjoy boating safely.

Boat Buying 101

There is an old saying that the best days of your life are when you buy the boat and when you sell the boat. In this class we’ll talk through the process including types of boats and options for ways to enjoy them. Additionally, we’ll outline the process of the purchasing and discuss the additional costs for moorage, insurance, and maintenance. Finally, we’ll go to the Seattle Boat Show to follow through on the discussions we’ve had in the class room.

Introduction to Boat Systems

Modern boats have a myriad of complicated systems, all of which require a basic understanding and a plan for routine maintenance. In this class students will learn the fundamentals of AC and DC electrical systems, engines an transmissions, marine sanitation and plumbing. Discussions will include 12 Volt DC systems including batteries, alternators and charging systems. This is a great primer for all boaters preparing to maintain or upgrade their vessel.

Mandatory Boater Education

Learn the basics of recreational boating in the Puget Sound with this comprehensive course created by the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission. Topics include navigation, tides & currents, boat types, trailering, safety, legal requirements and boating equipment. Upon completion students receive certification for the upcoming mandatory boater education program. The material exceeds that offered by the US Power Squadron and USCG Auxiliary.

Navigation 1

Cruise through the Puget Sound safely and confidently by taking this course designed for the novice boater. Students will learn the kills needed to read a chart, recognize aids to navigation, use a magnetic compass and understand tides and currents. In addition we cover the navigation rules, use of VHF, marine weather broadcasts and GPS. This very popular course is hands on requiring that the students have a chart, dividers, tide and current tables and time to practice. All tools required are available at The Chandlery.

The Chandlery offers a range of boater education classes through the Bainbridge Island Parks and Recreation Department as well as private classes.
